CELEBRATING OUR OWN

The AfroUnity Awards

Every year at Diaspora in Colour, we pause to celebrate the people building African queer life — the icons, the organizers, the creatives, and the quiet forces of change. The AfroUnity Awards exist because our achievements are too often overlooked elsewhere. Here, we name them, celebrate them, and give them the stage they deserve.

10 CATEGORIES

This Year's Awards

Category 01

Queer Icon of the Year

Honoring an established figure whose life and work have left a lasting mark on African queer culture — someone whose presence has helped shape what visibility and pride look like for the people who came after them.

Category 02

Community Leader of the Year

For someone who shows up, again and again, to bring people together — building spaces, organizing gatherings, and creating real change from the ground up.

Category 03

Changemaker of the Year

Recognizing someone pushing past old barriers and moving the community forward — through advocacy, organizing, or simply refusing to accept less than we deserve.

Category 04

Creative of the Year

Celebrating excellence in art, music, fashion, film, writing, or any other creative work — work that reflects the fullness of African queer expression.

Category 05

Content Creator of the Year

For the storytellers using digital platforms — video, photography, writing, social media — to tell our stories, spark conversation, and build community online.

Category 06

Entrepreneur of the Year

Honoring an African queer entrepreneur building something meaningful — a business, a brand, or an idea rooted in vision and resilience.

Category 07

Rising Star of the Year

For an emerging voice or leader to watch — someone whose impact in our community is only just beginning.

Category 08

Unsung Hero of the Year

For the person doing important, often invisible work without ever seeking recognition — the ones who make everything else possible.

Category 09

Couple of the Year

Celebrating a couple whose relationship represents love, partnership, and community — a reminder of what it looks like to build a life together, fully and openly.

Category 10 · The Biggest Honor

AfroUnity Impact Award
